“Through map’s whispers and locket’s sigh,

Cut through the quiet, search the sky.

Through seams of time, across the ether,

Retrieve the missing, forever together.”

As I chanted it a second time, the pendant started moving in a gradually growing spiral that tugged my hand toward the left side of the map. I moved my hand over the eastern seaboard before chanting the spell a third time. The last words of the third iteration of the spell sent the pendant flying from my hand. It landed with a thump over New England.

“Huh.” I’d expected to find Alistair somewhere in South America, not in my backyard.

“What did it do?” Tybalt asked, from the spot he’d deemed a safe enough distance from the counter.

“It landed on Massachusetts,” I replied, frowning down at the map. My pendant was bigger than the state, but with the tip sitting squarely in the middle of it, there was no doubt I was right.

“That narrows it down somewhat.” His dubious frown negated his encouraging tone as he took a step closer to see for himself.

I grimaced. “Yeah, I need...” Before I could finish my thought, another rolled-up parchment dropped out of thin air onto the map spread out in front of me. I wasn’t surprised to unfurl a map of Massachusetts.

“Is that a map of the state?” Tybalt asked, stretching his neck to see.

“Yes. Would you come over here already? You saw for yourself, there’s nothing dangerous about this spell.”

Keeping his eyes trained on the map, Tybalt sidled over. “I was expecting it to... I dunno, burst into flames or something.” He shot me a sheepish grin that made me laugh.

“Did you seriously pluck this map idea straight out of a Buffy episode?” I’d seen that episode. Of all the fictional witches, Willow and Tara were the hardest to take seriously.

“I walked by while my sister was watching it one day,” he grumbled, his ears an unnatural shade of pink.

“Sure, she was.” I grinned at him. To be fair, I’d only recently seen the episode with Aurie. I hadn’t watched much TV as a child.

He settled himself at the end of the counter, close enough to see, far enough to be out of the way if things went sideways and watched me spread the new map in place of the old one.

The pendant repeated its dance over the map as I recited the spell again. When I was done, its tip rested on the edge of Boston’s financial district.

“He’s right here?” I marveled, peering closer at the map.

Tybalt leaned in. “Corner of Kilby and State? I’ve been there. It’s one of the newer skyscrapers.”

“That’s weird, right? Aren’t those things all offices?” I asked, squinting at the map as if it might answer my question.

Tybalt shrugged. “My dad knows some people who live in penthouses in buildings that are mostly offices. They’re pretty swanky. Gimme a sec to see who it belongs to.”

He grunted a few times as his fingers raced over his phone’s keyboard. “Aha!” he crowed. “Got it.” He looked up and shot me a cocky grin.
